We hold an enviable reputation for the range and quality of our plants, many of which are grown at our nursery in Buckinghamshire. We source as many of our plants as possible from England with the vast majority coming from the South East. This not only cuts down on travel emissions, but also ensures the plants you buy are suitable for the climate in which you will grow them. Cheaper, faster grown plants are available, but are inferior in so many ways.
Propagation By Post
We are launching a new service whereby customers can send in cuttings for propagation which are then returned as an established, healthy plant. The plants are then either collected, ready potted from Clifton Nurseries or are sent by post in liner pots, ready for bedding out. The service is available to gardeners nationally.
This is a mid to long-term service, depending on the type of plant, with some species ready at 6-8 months earliest, such as fuchsias and hydrangeas, with more woody plants such as camellias and hibiscus, taking up to 18 months.
When the cuttings are received at Clifton Nurseries, they are checked for health and viability to ascertain if they have a strong chance of developing into a healthy plant. Once this has been confirmed, the cuttings are placed in plug cells and moved to the heated propagation house, where they remain until they begin to root. Plants are then transferred to an unheated house, where progress is continually checked until they are sufficiently established to be put into 9cm liner pots to continue rooting for healthy growth.
There is a service charge of just £15, excluding postage and packing. For further information, customers can email Guy Pullen at guy.pullen@clifton.co.uk or call 020 7432 1866.
Listed below you'll find our main plant categories. We are currently creating catalogues of the plants that you are likely to find at Clifton Nurseries - the first catalogue will be available to download shortly. If you don't see the plant that you are after, don't despair, we may still have it stock and if not, we can source plants through our Plant Finder Service.
Alpines: Also known as Rock Plants, Alpines are traditionally at home in Rockeries, but modern, urban gardens are also ideal for these diminutive specimens. Alpines thrive in the quick drainage and exposed conditions of the mountain side or rocky face as well as the roof terraces and balconies that imitate them.
Annual Bedding Plants: Whether you're completing the glorious Victorian planting schemes of Waddesdon Manor whom we supply, or simply filling a window box or planter, Annual Bedding provides an unrivalled burst of colour. Don't be shy when buying bedding; there is nothing worse than a half full bed or basket.
Bamboos & Grasses: A vast family of plants that ranges from towering Phyllostachys to gently swaying Briza. Modern, naturalistic planting relies on the soft silhouette and gentle movement of grasses like Stipa and Carex, with the stunning planting of
Piet Oudolf and Beth Chatto leading the way.
Bulbs, Corms and Tubers: The emergence of Daffodils heralds spring like nothing else and is an essential sight in any garden. Our spring flowering bulbs are available for sale from the first week of September and we advise that you shop early as they sell fast! Summer flowers like Dahlias, Begonias and Gladioli are available from Mid January and should be planted when the weather warms.
Climbers: We sell a huge range of 2' tall climbers in 2L pots and they'll soon shoot up to cover your wall or trellis. However, if you fancy something a little quicker, choose our established 12L plants that are ready grown on a trellis.
Fruit and Vegetables: There is nothing better than eating a home grown tomato still warm from the sun. As home grown produce takes on a new lease of life, so our ranges grow and develop. This spring you'll find many fruit and vegetable plants and trees available and, if you're feeling brave, you'll find an even bigger selection of seeds.
Herbaceous Perennials: Once thought of as a more mature choice of planting, Perennials are coming into their own once more. They'll take a little more maintenance than your evergreen shrub bed, but 'oh' the joy that they will bring...!
Shrubs: There are so many beautiful shrubs available, that it is often hard to choose the right one. If you are in need of advice you can refer to our advice sheets, or better still, come in and speak to our knowledgeable staff.
Topiary: Commonly seen in containers and formal gardens, the role of Topiary in mixed beds and borders is often overlooked. The rambling form of a Herbaceous border can be brought into line with some carefully selected shapes.
Trees: A well chosen tree will do wonders for a garden that can house it. For urban dimensions and good blossom, choose Malus, Pyrus and many Prunus and you won't go far wrong. For something a little different, look for Liquidamber or Amalanchier.
Our plant stock changes daily as new plants become available and older plants pass out of season. We constantly strive to provide you with the best stock that is available and as such our plant lists will never be 100% accurate, they will however serve as a good guide to the plants we sell.
