Hampstead Garden Suburb family garden

Set in the Hampstead Garden Suburb conservation area, the brief for the garden of this Grade II listed Arts & Crafts house was to accommodate the needs of a family of seven, with children ranging from newborn to teenagers, creating useable, fun play space while allowing the 'grown-ups' their own space to enjoy and relax - and at the same time ensure the garden looked beautiful and enhanced the setting of the house.

Using traditional materials that are associated with the Arts & Crafts movement - English oak, reclaimed brick, traditional Kent peg tiles - the garden is divided into a play zone consisting of a large lawned area for ball games, a fun space with children's play equipment, and a peaceful, beautifully planted 'garden within a garden' for the grown ups to enjoy.

The garden successfully combined these different needs by allocating each the appropriate space and then ensuring suitable screen planting separated one from the other, without creating dense boundaries in the garden. The result is a garden where the family can come together and enjoy their own dedicated space as they wish.
